Applications are invited for the post of Health and Safety Advisor in the Executive Directorate, based in the Town Hall.  The successful applicant will be a member of a Property Services Group taking a lead role for the Council in carrying out Health and Safety related reviews, providing recommendations for positive health and safety improvement and embedding good practice and appropriate Health and Safety policies and procedures throughout the Council.  

The post is offered on a full-time basis of 37 hours per week. 

The main duties of the post involve acting as the Council’s principal source of expertise in relation to our duties under Health and Safety legislation, and taking a lead role in the establishment of standards and policies across the Council. You will also work with managers and others to establish consistent methodologies for risk assessments and the implementation of control measures. You will also assist with our Emergency Planning functions and our response to Civil Contingencies.

The successful applicant must be educated to a good general standard and possess NEBOSH National General Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, and have experience of managing health and safety on a day to day basis and of monitoring health and safety performance of others.

Applicants should have an in depth understanding of Health and Safety legislation, and a proven ability to carry out appropriate risk assessments and put in place suitable control measures.  Applicants should have experience of working with a range of stakeholders.  Applicants should also have good communication skills and the ability to work on their own initiative and as part of a team.  You must have the ability to travel efficiently around the Borough to conduct visits and attend meetings; a full UK driving licence and access to a car would be an advantage

The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide information, advice and instruction in accurate spoken English is an essential requirement. 

The successful candidate will be automatically enrolled in the Local Government Pension Scheme and will be required to obtain a Basic Disclosure.
