Position Overview

The Shift Leader – Engineering Services is responsible for delivering comprehensive engineering support to ensure all operational building assets are maintained to the highest standards.

This role requires strong technical knowledge of building services systems, effective contingency planning, and strict adherence to Health & Safety legislation and industry best practices.

As the on-site coordination lead, the Shift Leader supervises the engineering team, Specialist Service Providers (SSPs), and contractors, ensuring all activities are delivered safely, efficiently, and professionally.

Key Responsibilities
Operational & Engineering Control

Maintain maximum uptime across all critical systems in line with operational requirements

Operate, monitor, and fault-find across building services systems

Supervise and coordinate Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance

Allocate and manage engineering tasks through the site maintenance management system

Maintain accurate plant records, asset registers, and maintenance documentation

Inspect completed works prior to permit closure and job sign-off

Deliver comprehensive shift handovers covering plant status, isolations, ongoing works, and site updates

Provide sickness and holiday cover for opposite shift personnel when required

Permit to Work & Compliance

Manage and administer the Permit to Work (PTW) system and associated Safe Systems of Work

Review and approve Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) prior to work commencement

Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation, site procedures, and company policies

Coordinate permit approvals, monitoring, and closures, escalating issues where necessary

Produce end-of-business reports covering open permits and compliance matters

Conduct contractor site inductions and maintain accurate compliance documentation

Ensure service providers operate in line with contractual Service Level Agreements (SLAs)

Specialist Service Provider Management

Coordinate and oversee specialist service provider visits and planned maintenance activities

Confirm approved SOPs, RAMS, and PTWs are in place before work begins

Inspect and verify the quality of completed works prior to documentation sign-off

Escalate technical recommendations, performance concerns, or compliance issues to management

Monitor contractor activities to ensure safe and compliant working practices at all times

Quality Assurance & Housekeeping

Maintain quality assurance procedures for tools, ladders, PPE, lifting equipment, and access systems

Ensure inspection records are accurate, up to date, and audit-ready

Monitor plant rooms and critical infrastructure areas for cleanliness and operational integrity

Maintain workshops, storage areas, rest facilities, and plant spaces to a professional standard

Projects & Site Works

Oversee small-scale engineering projects including moves, changes, and refurbishments

Liaise with approved contractors and suppliers to ensure safe and compliant project delivery

Support operational changes within front-of-house and shared building areas as required

Systems & Equipment Responsibility

Operational knowledge and fault-finding across:

Building Management Systems (BMS)

Lighting control systems

Air conditioning systems, including chilled beams and FCUs

Variable speed Air Handling Units (AHUs)

Boilers and heating systems

Single and three-phase motors

UPS systems and associated controls

Emergency lighting systems

Generators and static switches

Water treatment systems

Refrigeration systems

Personal Attributes & Qualifications
Essential

Minimum 10 years’ experience within the Building Services industry

City & Guilds Parts 1 & 2 (2360) or equivalent electrical qualification

18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)

Strong technical knowledge across electrical and mechanical building services systems

Proven ability to lead, motivate, and coordinate a technical team

Excellent communication skills and stakeholder engagement

Proactive, quality-driven approach to engineering operations

Good IT literacy and reporting capability

Physically fit and able to meet operational site demands

Professional, reliable, and punctual with high standards of integrity

Ability to interpret and act upon written and verbal instructions

Willingness to undertake further technical or leadership training

Desirable

City & Guilds 2391 Test & Inspection qualification

Candidates with strong leadership capability but partial technical experience may still be considered. Structured training and professional development will be provided as appropriate
