The Role: Director of Engineering

Location: London

Sector - Luxury Boutique Hotel and Private Portfolio

Salary: £70,000 to £80,000

An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a Director of Engineering to lead the engineering function for a distinctive London hotel as it completes a major refurbishment and prepares for its anticipated reopening in 2027.

Reporting to the Managing Director, you will take ownership of the engineering operation through a significant programme of restoration, project work and preparation for reopening. You will lead a long-standing core team of three, coordinate a substantial number of external contractors and oversee engineering support for the owner’s London residence and other local projects.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can balance long-term planning with the detail of day-to-day engineering. You’ll help shape the department for the hotel’s next chapter, while keeping the existing team engaged and supported through ongoing work across the wider property portfolio.

The role

  • Lead the engineering function across the hotel, restoration programme and associated projects.
  • Coordinate existing and new projects, working closely with contractors, architects, designers and senior stakeholders.
  • Oversee health, safety and compliance responsibilities, including use of the Shield Safety platform.
  • Monitor building systems, equipment performance and reliability, identifying issues and planning effective solutions.
  • Manage the engineering budget, expected to be around £1 million, and ensure spending is controlled and well prioritised.
  • Develop and implement energy-management initiatives that reduce consumption without compromising the guest or staff environment.
  • Advise senior management on engineering requirements, risks, priorities and investment.
  • Lead, develop and motivate the team, setting clear objectives and supporting recruitment and talent development.
  • Maintain positive relationships with colleagues, contractors and other internal and external partners.

About you

You’ll be an experienced engineering leader with a background in hotels, luxury hospitality, complex property or a similarly demanding environment. You’ll bring strong project and contractor-management skills, sound commercial judgement and a confident approach to health and safety.

Just as importantly, you’ll be a calm, collaborative leader who can keep a close-knit team motivated through a long programme of change. You’ll be comfortable working with senior decision-makers and external design teams, and able to balance high standards with practical, considered engineering solutions.
