Assistant Quantity Surveyor
Location: Cheltenham
Sector: Construction / Facilities / Built Environment Projects
Salary £35,000 plus £4,500 car allowance plus 10% bonus plus competitive benefits package
This position offers the opportunity to develop broad commercial experience across a varied programme of projects rather than being restricted to a single construction scheme. You will work closely with experienced commercial and technical professionals and gain exposure to the full project lifecycle, from initial feasibility and procurement through delivery and completion.
We are recruiting an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join an established commercial team responsible for delivering a varied programme of building, refurbishment and asset improvement works.
This is an excellent opportunity for an Assistant QS who wants to develop their commercial experience while working across multiple live projects. You will work alongside an experienced Commercial Manager, supporting projects from initial scoping and feasibility through procurement, delivery, cost management and final account.
The portfolio includes planned asset replacement, refurbishment, fit-out and change works within operational environments, providing good exposure to both traditional quantity surveying and wider commercial project management.
Key Responsibilities
Your role will include:
- Supporting the commercial management of multiple construction, refurbishment and improvement projects.
- Assisting with early-stage project reviews, feasibility assessments, budgets and scope development.
- Preparing procurement and tender information and supporting contractor selection.
- Reviewing quotations and helping ensure works demonstrate appropriate commercial value.
- Preparing and administering appointments, orders and construction contract documentation.
- Supporting the management of JCT and other relevant forms of contract.
- Reviewing contractor applications, valuations and project expenditure.
- Assessing changes to scope and their associated commercial implications.
- Maintaining accurate cost information, forecasts and project records.
- Producing commercial and cost reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Working closely with project managers, technical teams, contractors, consultants and client representatives.
- Supporting project close-out, final accounts and lessons-learned reviews.
- Helping maintain and improve commercial processes, templates and project controls.
- Managing priorities across several projects at different stages of delivery.
Qualifications/Requirements
We are interested in candidates who have already gained practical Quantity Surveying experience and are looking to continue developing their career.
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction or another relevant discipline.
- Previous QS experience gained with a consultancy, contractor, facilities/property organisation or client-side team.
- Experience supporting refurbishment, fit-out, building improvement or similar construction projects.
- An understanding of procurement, tendering, valuations, variations and cost management.
- Working knowledge of JCT contracts.
- A good understanding of construction practices and relevant building, health and safety and regulatory requirements.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Good commercial judgement and the confidence to work with a range of stakeholders.
- The ability to organise your own workload and manage competing deadlines.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
Candidates working towards a relevant professional qualification or chartership, such as RICS, CIOB or APM, would be particularly welcome.
Additional Requirements
The position involves work within high security operational environments, so the successful candidate must be comfortable working in locations where strict security procedures apply.
The role will be subject to appropriate background and security vetting. Candidates will need to satisfy the eligibility requirements associated with the necessary level of UK Government security clearance.
A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for business travel are also required.
