The Opportunity We are seeking an experienced Lead Mechanical Technician to join a high-performing engineering team within a critical / mission-critical environment.
This is a hands-on leadership role that combines technical delivery with team supervision. You will work on complex mechanical and building services systems, playing a key role in ensuring safety, compliance, and operational reliability while supporting site leadership and mentoring engineering staff.
Role Overview As a Lead Mechanical Technician, you will oversee Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, and minor project works. Acting as Deputy to the Technical Services Supervisor (TSS) when required, you will coordinate engineering activities, supervise subcontractors, and ensure all work meets the highest technical and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership & Supervision
- Act as Deputy to the Technical Services Supervisor (TSS) when required
- Participate in emergency escalation procedures and provide out-of-hours technical support
- Promote a strong culture of health & safety, professionalism, and technical excellence
- Ensure compliance with Safe Systems of Work, including RAMS, LOTO, and Permit to Work (PTW)
- Operate as Authorised Person (AP) where appointed
- Oversee and carry out PPM, reactive, and emergency maintenance on mechanical systems
- Diagnose and resolve faults to minimise downtime and operational disruption
- Coordinate maintenance activities via Helpdesk / CMMS systems and site stakeholders
- Ensure all work meets engineering standards, statutory requirements, and best practice
- Support minor projects, plant upgrades, and asset replacement programmes
- Allocate resources and prioritise workloads to meet SLAs and operational demands
- Supervise and mentor technicians and apprentices, supporting development
- Build strong relationships with clients, contractors, and internal teams
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and teamwork
- Provide regular updates to the Technical Services Supervisor, highlighting risks and performance
- Accurately record all activities within CMMS / CAFM systems
- Ensure compliance with statutory regulations, site procedures, and engineering standards
- Maintain training records and ensure ongoing technical competency
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services
- Minimum 5 years’ mechanical maintenance experience
- Experience in critical environments, data centres, or high-availability facilities (desirable)
- Proven experience supervising teams and coordinating maintenance activities
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills across mechanical and HVAC systems
- Good understanding of statutory compliance, engineering standards, and safe systems of work
- Experience using CMMS / CAFM systems and Microsoft Office
- Strong leadership and team management skills
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Self-motivated, organised, and able to manage competing priorities
- Strong commitment to health & safety and operational excellence
- Authorised Person (AP) certification
- Experience in mission-critical or high-risk environments
- Additional health & safety or technical certifications
- Work within a critical, high-performance engineering environment
- Combine hands-on engineering with leadership responsibilities
- Clear progression into supervisory or management roles
