The Opportunity We are seeking an experienced Shift Leader – Engineering Services to oversee engineering operations within a high-profile, technically demanding environment.

This is a leadership role requiring strong technical expertise in building services engineering, combined with the ability to coordinate teams, manage contractors, and ensure full compliance with Health & Safety legislation and operational standards.
You will play a critical role in maintaining system uptime, operational reliability, and service excellence, while leading a team of engineers and specialist service providers.

Role Overview As the Engineering Shift Leader, you will act as the on-site operational lead, responsible for supervising engineering activities, managing maintenance delivery, and ensuring all building systems are operating efficiently and safely.
You will coordinate Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive works, and small projects, while maintaining compliance with Permit to Work (PTW) systems and safe systems of work.

Key Responsibilities Operational & Engineering Management
  • Maintain maximum uptime across all critical building systems
  • Monitor, operate, and fault-find across electrical and mechanical services
  • Supervise delivery of PPM and reactive maintenance activities
  • Allocate and manage tasks via CAFM / maintenance management systems
  • Maintain accurate asset registers, plant records, and maintenance documentation
  • Deliver detailed shift handovers, including plant status and ongoing works
  • Provide shift cover as required
Permit to Work & Compliance
  • Manage and administer the Permit to Work (PTW) system
  • Review and approve Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
  • Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety legislation and site procedures
  • Coordinate permit approvals, monitoring, and closure processes
  • Produce compliance and end-of-day operational reports
  • Conduct contractor inductions and maintain audit-ready documentation
  • Ensure contractors meet Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
Contractor & Specialist Service Provider Management
  • Coordinate and supervise Specialist Service Providers (SSPs)
  • Verify approved SOPs, RAMS, and PTWs prior to work commencement
  • Inspect and sign off completed works to ensure quality and compliance
  • Escalate technical issues, risks, or performance concerns
  • Monitor contractor activities to ensure safe working practices
Quality Assurance & Site Standards
  • Maintain inspection regimes for tools, PPE, access equipment, and lifting gear
  • Ensure all records are accurate and compliant with audit requirements
  • Monitor plant rooms and infrastructure for cleanliness and operational integrity
  • Maintain workshops and storage areas to a professional standard
Projects & Continuous Improvement
  • Oversee small-scale engineering projects, refurbishments, and system upgrades
  • Liaise with contractors and suppliers to ensure safe project delivery
  • Support operational changes across building and shared spaces
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
Systems & Technical Expertise Operational knowledge and fault-finding across:
  • Building Management Systems (BMS)
  • HVAC systems (AHUs, FCUs, chilled beams)
  • Boilers and heating systems
  • Electrical distribution systems (single & three-phase)
  • UPS systems, generators, and emergency power systems
  • Emergency lighting systems
  • Water treatment and L8 compliance systems
  • Refrigeration and cooling systems
Essential Requirements
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in Building Services / Facilities Management
  • City & Guilds Parts 1 & 2 (2360) or equivalent electrical qualification
  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)
  • Strong technical knowledge across electrical and mechanical systems
  • Proven experience in team leadership and supervision
  • Strong understanding of PTW systems, RAMS, and compliance procedures
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Good IT literacy (CAFM systems, reporting tools)
