The University of Huddersfield is seeking a Maintenance Operative to join its Estates & Facilities team, delivering a high-quality maintenance service across a diverse multi-site estate.
Reporting to the Maintenance Services Supervisor, you will work as part of a multi-functional trade team delivering planned, preventative and reactive maintenance, minor works and small projects. The role involves a broad range of semi-skilled duties supporting the upkeep of buildings, plant and equipment across the University.
Key responsibilities include delivering reactive and planned maintenance tasks within agreed SLAs and KPIs, undertaking Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) activities, including air handling unit filter changes, fire and smoke damper testing and fire door inspections, as well as completing work instructions and certification via the CAFM system (Planon) using handheld devices.
You will have experience in a building maintenance or construction environment, with skills in areas such as carpentry, plumbing or flooring. You will be organised, adaptable and able to work both independently and as part of a team in a busy operational environment.
Essential requirements include:
- Demonstrable maintenance experience in a relevant trade area
- Skills for Life English and Maths qualifications or an equivalent standard (GCSEs at Grade E/2) or above
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety
- Good IT skills, including use of tablets and mobile devices
- Ability to prioritise workload and respond to emergency situations
- Full UK driving licence
Relevant qualifications (e.g., NVQ or equivalent) and training, such as IOSH Working Safely, Working at Height, PASMA, IPAF, or First Aid, are desirable.
The University is deeply committed to equality and diversity for all its students and staff. We seek to be diverse and inclusive, supporting individuals and groups to fulfil their potential and nurture a sense of belonging. We strive to be an accessible, inclusive employer, removing barriers for all. Find out more about our approach to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, including our commitments and accreditations as a Disability Confident Employer, Stonewall Gold Award holder, Top 100 Employer, Athena SWAN Bronze Award holder and Race Equality Charter Bronze Award holder.
Informal enquiries are welcome to Wayne Armitage, Maintenance Services Manager.
