Role Overview

The Deputy Shift Leader – Engineering plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, and emergency response services, with a primary focus on electrical systems. Acting as a High Voltage (HV) Authorised Person where required, you will ensure the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of the site’s electrical infrastructure.

This role blends technical expertise with developing leadership responsibility, supporting the Shift Leader and site management in maintaining operational continuity, client satisfaction, and professional standards.

Key Responsibilities
Compliance & Technical Operations

Deliver PPM activities according to schedules, statutory requirements, and industry best practice.

Maintain engineering standards to maximise plant reliability, asset lifespan, and system performance.

Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety legislation and site policies.

Complete maintenance documentation, reports, and QA records accurately.

Respond promptly to reactive electrical tasks and service desk requests.

Act as HV Authorised Person when required, following Permit to Work procedures and approved switching schedules.

Fault Diagnosis & Minor Works

Diagnose, troubleshoot, and rectify faults across electrical distribution and building services systems.

Undertake minor installations, system modifications, and upgrades.

Maintain and repair lighting systems, distribution boards, and associated components.

Support technical surveys and provide material specifications and cost estimates for minor works.

Coordination & Operational Support

Act as a point of contact for client maintenance queries, escalating complex issues as needed.

Supervise subcontractors and specialist vendors to ensure safe, high-quality service delivery.

Maintain and implement SOPs, RAMS, and electrical switching schedules.

Coordinate engineering resources across sites to maintain operational resilience.

Provide leadership support, promoting teamwork, accountability, and performance excellence.

Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

Adhere strictly to company and site HSE standards.

Ensure correct use of PPE and safe working practices.

Participate in incident reporting, investigations, and corrective actions.

Support internal and external HSE audits and compliance reviews.

Review and update Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).

Promote a zero-incident culture and support management-led HSE initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

Completed Electrical Apprenticeship (or equivalent) in building maintenance or facilities management.

City & Guilds 2360 Parts 1 & 2 (Electrical Installation) or equivalent.

17th or 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations certification.

Strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical building services systems.

Proven experience in PPM, fault diagnosis, reactive maintenance, and inspection/testing.

Understanding of Health & Safety legislation and best practice.

Strong organisational, communication, and team collaboration skills.

Desirable:

City & Guilds 2360 Part 3 (or equivalent).

HV Authorised Person status or experience under Permit to Work systems.

Experience in critical environments (e.g., multi-site portfolios, banking, data centres).

Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS).

Knowledge of UPS systems, emergency power, and standby generation.

PASMA and/or IPAF certification.

IT literacy including MS Office and CAFM/PPM platforms.

Previous supervisory experience or ambition to progress into leadership roles.

Working Hours

Based on a defined shift pattern aligned to site operational requirements.

Flexibility required for shift cover, emergency call-outs, and overtime.

All working hours and overtime comply with the Working Time Directive.
