Shift Leader
Reporting to: Technical Supervisor
Location: Site Based
Hours: Days – 07:00 to 19:00 (4 on, 4 off shift pattern)
Position Overview
The Shift Leader is responsible for providing comprehensive engineering support to maintain all operational building assets. The role requires a detailed understanding of building services systems, contingency procedures, and compliance with current Health & Safety legislation and building codes of practice.
You will ensure all engineering operations are controlled effectively, with full regard to health and safety, business risk, and uptime requirements. The role demands high standards in asset performance, completion of assigned works, and prompt resolution of abnormal operating conditions and housekeeping issues.
The Shift Leader acts as the on-site coordination point for day-to-day operations, overseeing the engineering team, specialist service providers (SSPs), and support teams to ensure all activities are carried out safely, professionally, and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities
Operational & Engineering Control
- Ensure 100% uptime criteria is maintained across all critical systems.
- Operate and monitor all building systems competently and efficiently.
- Supervise and coordinate engineering activities including PPM and reactive works within agreed timescales.
- Allocate PPM tasks and manage reactive works through the maintenance system.
- Maintain plant records and asset registers.
- Ensure all work is inspected prior to closure of work permits.
- Maintain excellent shift handovers including plant status, isolations, ongoing works, and housekeeping standards.
- Provide sickness and holiday cover for the opposite shift member as required.
- Manage and control Permit to Work (PTW) systems and Safe Systems of Work.
- Review and monitor Risk Assessments and Method Statements.
- Ensure all site activities comply with current Health & Safety legislation.
- Coordinate, approve, and close work permits, escalating where necessary.
- Provide end-of-business reporting on outstanding permits.
- Conduct site inductions and maintain accurate records.
- Ensure service providers comply with contractual Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Coordinate all specialist service provider visits.
- Ensure approved SOPs, Risk Assessments, and PTWs are in place prior to works.
- Inspect quality of completed works and sign off worksheets where required.
- Escalate recommendations and issues to management.
- Monitor supplier activities to ensure safe and compliant conduct.
- Maintain QA audit procedures for tools, ladders, PPE, lifting and access equipment.
- Ensure inspection logs are up to date and auditable.
- Monitor plant rooms and critical areas for cleanliness and condition.
- Ensure workshops, stores, rest areas, and plant spaces are maintained to a high standard.
- Oversee small project works including moves/changes and planned refurbishments.
- Liaise with approved suppliers and contractors.
- Support operational changes within front-of-house and common areas.

- Generators
- Static Switches
- Water Treatment Systems
- Refrigeration Systems
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in the Building Services industry.
- City & Guilds Parts 1 & 2 (236) or equivalent.
- 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations.
- C&G 2391 Test & Inspection (preferred).
- Strong technical competence across building services systems.
- Proven ability to lead, motivate and direct a technical team.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage at all levels.
- Proactive and quality-driven approach.
- Good IT and reporting skills.
- Physically fit and able to meet site demands.
- Professional and presentable appearance.
- High level of integrity, honesty, and punctuality.
- Ability to understand and act on written and verbal instructions.
- Willingness to undertake further training where required.
