Job objectives and responsibilities

To contribute to effective contract performance by working closely with Fire Section to support the implementation of company, MoD policies and strategies in order to achieve business objectives.

Main duties

Leadership and Management


  • Responsible for the day to day management of staff at Ascension Island Base fire station.
  • To be proactive in facilitating the training and development of fire station personnel, and be responsible for their discipline and welfare, managing in line with Defence policies, values and behaviours.
  • Responsible for resources at a fire station, ensuring personnel and appliances meet minimum fire cover requirements.
  • Ensure that the station has a robust administrative systems and is compliant with all relevant departmental policies.

Communication


  • Positively communicate and support managerial and Authority decisions.
  • Positively communicate and support the implementation of Defence Policies, procedures and management guidance.
  • To represent and provide input to the Ascension Island Base Commander on matters that affect the area covered by the fire station.
  • To conduct briefings and presentations to Military and Defence staff and members of the community to groups of varying size, on a range of station based initiatives.
  • To ensure that corporate information/instructions are disseminated to all personnel.
  • To ensure Managers are briefed and updated on any major issues affecting the station and/or station personnel.

Performance Management


  • To maintain management information and operational systems to support good service delivery and contribute to safe systems of working.
  • To be responsible for the overall leadership and management of staff on a station, in line with CAPITA/DEFENCE FIRE RESCUE and Defence policies, practices and management guidance.
  • To lead and manage the performance and development of staff within their line management chain with the aim of providing a flexible and efficient team that delivers on time and against the agreed objectives.
  • To assess and develop staff against set criteria in a range of processes in accordance with CAPITA/DEFENCE FIRE RESCUE policies and standardisation procedures.
  • To liaise with a range of Fire Departments to ensure personnel are trained and developed in accordance with current policies.
  • To undertake the managerial role and responsibilities required within Defences Management policy, and to ensure junior managers carry out their responsibilities.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring own continuing professional development, identifying areas where new skills and/or knowledge would be beneficial in relation to the duties of the post and undertaking appropriate developmental activities in consultation with line manager, subject to budgetary constraints.
  • Maintain awareness of CAPITA/DEFENCE FIRE RESCUE policies, and policy changes, in relation to the role and the level of responsibility. Carry out all activities in accordance with these policies, Requesting training and guidance as necessary.

Operational Duties


  • To lead, monitor and support individuals in the resolution of operational incidents in accordance with CAPITA/DEFENCE FIRE RESCUE policies, procedures and management guidance.
  • To respond to operational incidents as necessary either as Remote Monitoring Officer, Monitoring Officer, Incident Commander or a variety of functional roles to ensure the effective and safe resolution of operational incidents.
  • To identify and implement an appropriate operational plan to successfully resolve an incident taking into consideration ALL available risk information.
  • To monitor and review the performance of teams and individuals and provide feedback on staff performance.

External Engagement


  • To represent in all Fire Safety matters relevant to the station.
  • To represent at meetings with external stakeholders and organisations as determined by senior management instructions.
  • To participate, as required, on working groups, project teams and committees.

Administration


  • To monitor and review personnel and training records to support information management.
  • To compile and provide statistical information on a range of work streams to inform decision making.
  • To ensure that environmental impacts are considered when carrying out the duties of the post.
  • Investigate accidents and near miss events, prepare reports and action plans including necessary corrective actions.

Person Specification


  • CAPITA/DEFENCE FIRE RESCUE Station Manager Incident Management or equivalent.
  • Defence Fire Safety Level 3 (minimum).
  • Local Authority qualified, Ex-RAF, DFRS/CAPITA/DEFENCE FIRE RESCUE, Ex-Royal Navy Aircraft Handler, with knowledge of MOD Airfield Crash Rescue.
  • Excellent communicator, both written and Oral.
  • Must have a flexible, "can do" attitude and will pitch in at all levels, working unsociable hours if necessary.
  • Must be capable of obtaining MoD basic level security clearance. Desirable - Already holds SC Clearance.
  • Must be capable of obtaining a work Visa from Ascension Island Government through the submission and acceptance of a valid basic police check.
  • Must be declared medically and dentally fit to work on Ascension Island by qualified healthcare professionals
  • Will promote professional image in all liaisons with customer and outside agencies.
  • Team player, with experience of developing Team spirit in a close knit environment.
  • Willing to Mentor subordinates and pass on knowledge and experience to others.
  • The post holder will hold a full driving licence and a valid passport.
  • Covid 19 fully vaccinated, with boosters appropriate to age group.
  • Qualified Fire Risk assessor.

Location: Ascension Island, South Atlantic Ocean (ASCN 1ZZ)

Contract type: Full Time Fixed Term Contract

Notice period: 2 months

Hours: 47.5 hours per week

Leave: 74 days leave excluding weekends . There will also be an entitlement to the Ascension Island Bank Holidays.

Length of tour: 27 months

Site allowance: 5%

Tour bonus: 10%
