General Manager (Superintendent) - New Spitalfields Market

£64,770 - £74,040 per annum inclusive of London Inner Weighting

Location: Leyton, London E10

Join the City of Food-Supply-Chain Heroes

About us

New Spitalfields Market is the UK’s largest fruit and vegetable market and, along with Billingsgate and Smithfield, one of three world-famous wholesale food markets owned and managed by the City of London Corporation. We provide and maintain the 13-hectare site and its infrastructure, and let out trading space on long-term leases. The site includes 115 trading units for wholesalers, as well as cold storage rooms, ripening rooms, and warehousing.

The role

Ensuring the smooth day-to-day operation of this historically and economically significant market is a major challenge. With overall responsibility for its efficiency and effectiveness, you’ll oversee diverse operational issues such as security, budgetary skills, cleaning and maintenance, health and safety, traffic management and renewal of tenancies. You’ll also contribute to strategic planning for its long-term success, while nurturing a co-operative working relationship between market tenants and the senior management of the City of London Corporation.

About you

To succeed in this high-profile role you’ll need substantial business administration and leadership experience, ideally including expertise in facilities management. We are looking for a strong, capable and flexible general manager, with good all-round commercial skills and knowledge of risk management and food hygiene, health and safety. Any experience in the food sector, supply chain or estate management would be helpful.

Closing date: 12 noon, 9 October 2019

Interviews scheduled for 1 and 4 November 2019.

The City of London is committed to Equal Opportunities and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
