CIBSE unveils Young Engineers Awards shortlist for 2020

Seventeen young engineers and six companies have been shortlisted for the Young Engineers Awards 2020, comprising: Graduate of the Year, Employer of the Year and Apprentice of the Year.

The Apprentice of the Year award, launched in 2020 to coincide with the 25^th year of the Young Engineers Awards, allows the CIBSE community to recognise more of our early career contributors and to acknowledge the invaluable contribution played by apprentices.

Entrants were required to submit a short video presentation on the topic: ‘Why the role of a building services engineer is a good career.’

The nine shortlisted apprentices impressed the judges with their passion, pride drive and commitment to building services engineering.

Eight newly graduated engineers join the impressive line-up to be shortlisted for the CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year award.

The CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate Award has long been the most sought after accolade for young building services engineers.

Finalists will be challenged to show off their presentation skills on a given topic in front of a panel of industry judges at the online final in October.

This year’s winner will enjoy a fully paid for trip to an ASHRAE Winter Meeting in in 2021. The awards are also supported by the Manly Trust.

Six forward-looking companies finish the stellar line-up, making up the Employer of the Year shortlist.

The award is split into three categories for small, medium and large employers, together with an overall winner. Employers were asked to demonstrate how they place young engineers at the centre of their business and invest in their career progression with clear strategies for recruiting, nurturing and empowering them.

The Young Engineers awards collectively shine a spotlight on the pool of new talent and future leaders who are vital to the future of our industry, while also celebrating those who champion, mentor and nurture them.

Ewen Rose, Graduate of the Year judge, said: ‘We are delighted that the CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year Award is able to celebrate its 25th anniversary with this wonderfully impressive line-up of finalists. This award has matured into one of the most sought after professional accolades for young engineers. Everyone attending the final online on October 8th should be hugely reassured about our profession's future when they see the range and depth of talent on show.’

Winners will be unveiled on 8 October at the online Young Engineers Awards event, delivered in partnership with CIBSE Patrons, and sponsored by Kingspan Industrial Insulation, Baxi and Ideal Commercial Boilers and Swegon Air Management.

A compilation video of the shortlisted Apprentice of the Year videos will be available after the event.
