UKWSL – setting a new ‘academic’ standard for excellent customer service

Leading waste and recycling broker UKWSL, has recently launched their very own in-house learning and development scheme, ‘UKWSL Academy’. As a broker, UKWSL has no tangible product to sell and therefore it is the people they employ who enable them to distinguish its service offering from the pack.

The UKWSL Academy will support the business in delivering its trademark high level of customer service on an even more consistent basis. It will also improve staff retention and succession planning and the encouragement of movement between departments. Training for all staff will now be on a continuous basis and the company has committed to delivering 11 days training per employee, per year, which amounts to an investment of over £66,000 for 2019-2020. Training will be from a selection of 5 key areas: Role Specific, Business Specific, Personal Development Training, Industry Training and Management Training.

During the first three months of this year, each member of staff will undertake at least two pieces of training through the new Academy programme. Training will be delivered through a number of different channels from online, to in-house presentations, to external trainers.

Underpinning the rationale of the UKWSL Academy, is the Induction and Training Charter which the directors have signed up to abide by. Under the terms of the Charter, the Directors have committed to giving people their time wherever possible and that in turn, employees are expected to utilise the training they have received to the best of their ability.

Cathy Cook, People Director of UKWSL, commented: “The workforce at UKWSL grew by an astonishing 50% in the three years between 2015 and 2018, and therefore it’s more important than ever that training is delivered in a consistent and professional manner. We spent many months finessing every detail of the UKWSL Academy and feel extremely pleased with the resulting programme of training on offer to our employees. We will ensure that staff feedback on the training they receive so that the Academy is continually held to the highest possible standards.”

Max Kanda, Managing Director of UKWSL, adds: “In the fast-changing world of waste and recycling and an ever-brighter spotlight fixed on the environment, we recognised the need for our employees to keep up with not just our own business but the wider industry as well. Cathy and her team have worked tirelessly on the creation of UKWSL Academy, and we are confident that the personal development of our employee base will be in line with the projected growth of our business.”
