An exciting opportunity has arisen, supporting a large Healthcare organisation as a Fire, Health and Safety Advisor.

This is an interim post for 3 months initially, working in London at a Band 6 - £31.57 per hour.
The role will be working inside IR35.


Support and instruct all staff and departments on Fire, Health & Safety, ensuring the organisation meets its statutory and mandatory requirements.

Main Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for risk assessments, overseeing audits, writing policies, and preparing reports;
  • Ensure all accidents and incidents pertaining to personal injuries are investigated and provide expert support and advice to managers and staff dealing with RIDDOR reportable incidents;
  • Ensure the organisation maintains relevant aspects of organisation schemes and national standards e.g., CQC compliance;
  • Provide expert advisory service for managers and staff on all health and safety, and fire related issues;
  • Implement national risk management initiatives as appropriate and ensure compliance with the requirements with all relevant external agencies e.g., HSE, EA, CQC, NHSLA etc;
  • Liaise with and advise all staff groups and third parties on expectations, ensuring that work is undertaken in line with legislation and organisation requirements which can exceed legislative boundaries;
  • Liaise with the legal team on any health and safety incidents which may have the potential to become legal claims;
  • Liaise with and report to statutory bodies including the Health and Safety Executive, Environmental Health Department and Fire Authority;
  • Write and implement the relevant aspects of the organisation’s Risk Management Strategy and Policy, facilitating the identification of hazards, assessing the risk and instituting actions plans;
  • Ensure the development and dissemination of Health & Safety policies; that these are regularly reviewed, amended, and communicated to staff through internal communication systems;
  • Manage all non-clinical incidents and near misses via the Datix incident reporting system;
  • Manage the Estates and Facilities risk register process;
  • Undertake fire and health and safety audits across the entire business to ensure compliance with statutory legislation and best practice;
  • Establish effective systems to keep staff up to date with health and safety issues e.g., newsletters, information sheets, seminars, tool box talks, web-based information, and Risk Action Groups;
  • Co-ordinate and inform the work of the Health and Safety Committee;
  • Assess and define the training needs of the organisation to meet its requirements.

A successful candidate will have:

  • Minimum of 5 years Health & Safety Experience within the NHS;
  • NEBOSH Certificates in both Fire, and Health & Safety Certificate, or equivalent;
  • Detailed knowledge of current Health & Safety legislation and best practice;
  • The ability to use Datix Incident Reporting System or equivalent experience;
  • Knowledge of the external framework in which Health & Safety/Risk Management is delivered and monitored;
  • Ability to remain calm and issue clear and concise instructions in a crisis.
