Job Overview – Data Centre Shift Leader / Shift Engineer As a Data Centre Shift Leader / Shift Engineer, you will play a critical role in maintaining uptime, resilience, and operational reliability within a mission-critical environment.
You will be responsible for overseeing electrical and mechanical maintenance activities, ensuring all works are delivered in line with Service Level Agreements (SLAs), compliance standards, and operational procedures.
Key Responsibilities Operations & Maintenance
- Operate and maintain electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems within a strict change management framework to support 100% uptime
- Monitor, control, and troubleshoot critical plant and infrastructure systems
- Manage incidents, problems, change requests, and escalations through to resolution
- Oversee operation of key systems including:
- HV/LV electrical distribution
- UPS systems and generators
- HVAC and cooling systems
- Fire detection and suppression systems
- Water treatment and associated plant
- Utilise BMS, PMS, and CMS systems to monitor and optimise site performance
- Ensure accurate system data and operational reporting
- Proactively identify risks and opportunities for performance improvement
- Plan and deliver Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) in line with schedules
- Coordinate and supervise subcontractors and specialist vendors
- Ensure all works are delivered safely, on time, and to a high standard
- Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent qualification
- Strong experience in:
- Electrical systems (LV/MV) fault finding and repair
- Mechanical / HVAC systems maintenance
- Experience working in critical environments, data centres, or building services
- Solid understanding of safe systems of work and electrical regulations
- Proven ability in troubleshooting and fault diagnosis
- HND / HNC in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- Background in a Data Centre or mission-critical environment
- Recognised electrical or mechanical certifications
- Ex-Forces engineering background
- Experience with medium voltage systems
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, including Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
- Good understanding of change management processes
- Experience working with service desk / ticketing systems
- Ability to follow technical procedures and documentation
- Strong decision-making and organisational skills
- Effective team player with the ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines
- Working knowledge of BMS and CAFM / PPM systems
